Degenerative Arthritis of the Spine (Spondylosis)

VA disability rating criteria for Degenerative Arthritis of the Spine (Spondylosis) under Diagnostic Code 5242. The VA assigns ratings of 10%, 20%, 40%, 50% based on the severity and functional impact of your condition.

Rating Criteria

10%Disability Rating

With or without symptoms such as pain (whether or not it radiates), stiffness, or aching in the area of the spine affected by degenerative arthritis: forward flexion of the thoracolumbar spine greater than 60 degrees; or; combined range of motion greater than 120 degrees; or; muscle spasm, guarding, or localized tenderness not resulting in abnormal gait or abnormal spinal contour.

Note: Degenerative arthritis of the spine is rated under the same General Rating Formula as DC 5237. The condition must be documented on imaging (X-ray, MRI, or CT scan). IVD syndrome with neurological signs may warrant a separate higher rating.

20%Disability Rating

Forward flexion of the thoracolumbar spine 30 to 60 degrees; or; the combined range of motion not greater than 120 degrees; or; muscle spasm or guarding severe enough to result in an abnormal gait or abnormal spinal contour such as scoliosis, reversed lordosis, or abnormal kyphosis.

40%Disability Rating

Forward flexion of the thoracolumbar spine 30 degrees or less; or; favorable ankylosis of the entire thoracolumbar spine.

50%Disability Rating

Unfavorable ankylosis of the entire thoracolumbar spine.
