Unstable or Painful Scars (Not Head, Face, or Neck)

VA disability rating criteria for Unstable or Painful Scars (Not Head, Face, or Neck) under Diagnostic Code 7804. The VA assigns ratings of 10%, 20%, 30% based on the severity and functional impact of your condition.

Rating Criteria

10%Disability Rating

Unstable or painful scar(s): One or two scars that are unstable (break open, ulcerate) or painful on examination; covering a small area.

Note: Unstable scar = one that spontaneously breaks down (ulcerates) 3 or more times in 12 months without trauma. Painful scar = verified by examination findings.

20%Disability Rating

Unstable or painful scars: Three to four scars that are unstable or painful on examination.

30%Disability Rating

Unstable or painful scars: Five or more scars that are unstable or painful on examination; or with significant impairment of function from scar pain/instability.
