Healthcare

VA Health Care

Free to low-cost depending on Priority Group

Comprehensive medical care provided through the Veterans Health Administration (VHA), including primary care, specialty care, mental health services, prescriptions, and preventive care. Veterans with service-connected disabilities rated 50% or higher receive free care; others pay based on income and priority group.

Agency: Veterans Health Administration (VHA)Processing: 2-4 weeks for enrollment decision

Note: Apply via Form 10-10EZ. Priority Group assignment determines copay levels. Combat veterans get 5 years of free care post-separation.

Education

Vocational Rehabilitation & Employment (VR&E — Chapter 31)

Full tuition (uncapped) + Post-9/11 BAH rate (if elected) + books/supplies for up to 48 months

Provides employment support and training to veterans with a service-connected disability rating of at least 10% (or 20% memorandum rating at separation) who have an employment handicap. Covers full tuition (including private/graduate schools — no in-state cap like GI Bill), books, supplies, and a monthly subsistence allowance for up to 48 months (extendable). CRITICAL STRATEGY: Veterans with remaining Post-9/11 GI Bill (Chapter 33) entitlement — even one day — can elect the higher Chapter 33 BAH rate instead of the standard subsistence allowance. This means veterans should use VR&E FIRST before the GI Bill to get uncapped tuition + higher housing allowance + save GI Bill for later/transfer to dependents.

Agency: Veterans Benefits Administration (VBA) — Vocational Rehabilitation & Employment ServiceProcessing: Initial appointment within 2-4 weeks of application; plan development 1-3 months

Note: BEST STRATEGY: Use VR&E before GI Bill. VR&E pays uncapped tuition (private schools OK) + elect Chapter 33 BAH rate if any GI Bill entitlement remains. Preserves GI Bill months for dependents. 12-year eligibility window from separation or rating notification.

Post-9/11 GI Bill (Chapter 33)

100% in-state tuition + housing allowance (avg. ~$2,000+/month) + $1,000/year books

Education benefit for veterans who served at least 90 days of active duty after September 10, 2001. Covers full in-state public tuition, a monthly housing allowance (BAH rate E-5 with dependents at campus zip code), and an annual books/supplies stipend. Can be transferred to dependents when certain service requirements are met.

Agency: Veterans Benefits Administration (VBA) — Education ServiceProcessing: 30 days for enrollment certification; first payment within 2-4 weeks of enrollment verification

Note: STRATEGY: Use VR&E (Chapter 31) first if eligible — it has uncapped tuition (covers private schools) and preserves GI Bill for transfer to dependents. Chapter 33 and 31 cannot be used simultaneously.

Housing

VA Home Loan Guarantee

No down payment on loans up to conforming loan limit; saves avg. $300+/month vs. conventional loan

Enables eligible veterans, service members, and surviving spouses to purchase, build, or refinance a home with no down payment, no private mortgage insurance (PMI), and competitive interest rates. The VA guarantees a portion of the loan, allowing private lenders to offer favorable terms. Entitlement can be restored after loan payoff.

Agency: VA Loan Guaranty ServiceProcessing: Certificate of Eligibility (COE) can be obtained instantly via VA.gov or through a lender

Note: VA funding fee can be waived for veterans with service-connected disabilities. Entitlement can be restored after selling home and paying off loan. No loan limit for veterans with full entitlement since 2020.

Financial

VA Disability Compensation

$180.42/month (10%) to $3,938.57/month (100%) — 2026 rates

Tax-free monthly payments to veterans with physical or mental conditions related to military service. Compensation rates are based on the combined disability rating (0–100%) assigned by the VA and increase for veterans with dependents. A 100% P&T (Permanent & Total) rating provides the maximum benefit.

Agency: Veterans Benefits Administration (VBA)Processing: 125-150 days average for initial claims; Fully Developed Claims (FDC) average 90 days

Note: File via VA.gov, eBenefits, or with an accredited VSO. Fully Developed Claims (FDC) process faster. Intent to File (ITF) preserves effective date for up to 1 year.

VA Life Insurance (SGLI/VGLI)

Up to $500,000 in life insurance coverage

Servicemembers Group Life Insurance (SGLI) provides low-cost life insurance to active-duty service members. Upon separation, veterans can convert to Veterans Group Life Insurance (VGLI) without proving insurability. Coverage ranges from $10,000 to $500,000 in $10,000 increments.

Agency: VA Office of Servicemembers' Group Life Insurance (OSGLI)Deadline: VGLI: Apply within 240 days of separation (no medical exam); up to 1 year 120 days with medical exam

Note: SGLI is automatic for active duty ($500k default). VGLI premiums increase with age — compare with private insurance. Service-Disabled Veterans Insurance (S-DVI) is separate program for veterans with new service-connected disabilities.

Special Monthly Compensation - S (SMC-S / Housebound)

$4,408.53/month total (2026 rate) — approximately $469.96/month more than standard 100%

Additional tax-free monthly compensation for veterans who have a single service-connected disability rated 100% AND an additional service-connected disability independently rated at 60% or more. Also awarded to veterans who are permanently housebound due to service-connected disabilities. SMC-S provides a significant monthly increase over the standard 100% rate. This is commonly overlooked — many veterans with 100% schedular plus additional ratings qualify automatically.

Agency: Veterans Benefits Administration (VBA)

Note: Many veterans with TDIU + additional ratings qualify but never apply. Check if any single disability is rated 100% schedular with 60%+ independently rated additional disabilities.

Special Monthly Compensation - K (SMC-K)

$139.87/month per SMC-K award (2026 rate) — added on top of regular compensation

Additional tax-free monthly compensation paid on TOP of regular disability compensation for specific anatomical losses or loss of use. SMC-K is awarded per qualifying loss — a veteran can receive multiple SMC-K awards (up to 3). Common qualifying conditions include: loss of use of a creative organ (erectile dysfunction), loss of use of a hand or foot, deafness in both ears, blindness in one eye, loss of a breast, or loss of use of a buttock. SMC-K is the most widely awarded and most commonly overlooked SMC level. Must be service-connected or secondary to a service-connected condition.

Agency: Veterans Benefits Administration (VBA)

Note: Often overlooked — veterans with ED secondary to medications or prostate conditions frequently qualify. Can receive up to 3 SMC-K awards simultaneously. Filed as part of disability claim or supplemental claim.

VA Pension

Up to $1,453/month (single veteran, 2026)

Needs-based financial assistance for wartime veterans with limited income and net worth who are 65 or older, or permanently and totally disabled from non-service-connected causes. The VA calculates eligibility based on annual income compared to Maximum Annual Pension Rate (MAPR).

Agency: Veterans Benefits Administration (VBA)Processing: 90-120 days average

Note: Net worth limit includes all assets except home and vehicle. Unreimbursed medical expenses can reduce countable income. Consider Aid & Attendance if veteran needs daily assistance.

Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC)

$1,699.36/month base rate for surviving spouse (2026)

Monthly tax-free payments to surviving spouses, children, and parents of service members who died in the line of duty or veterans whose death resulted from a service-connected condition. DIC is not income-based and provides stable long-term support to military families.

Agency: Veterans Benefits Administration (VBA)Processing: 90-120 days average

Note: Survivors of veterans rated 100% P&T for 10+ continuous years before death may qualify even if death was not service-connected. File VA Form 21-534EZ.

Aid and Attendance (A&A)

Up to $2,874/month (veteran with spouse requiring A&A, 2026)

An enhanced VA Pension benefit that provides additional monthly payments to veterans who require the regular aid of another person, are bedridden, are patients in a nursing home due to disability, or have a visual impairment. Also available as a Housebound benefit for those confined to the home.
