VA Life Insurance (SGLI/VGLI)
Up to $500,000 in life insurance coverageServicemembers Group Life Insurance (SGLI) provides low-cost life insurance to active-duty service members. Upon separation, veterans can convert to Veterans Group Life Insurance (VGLI) without proving insurability. Coverage ranges from $10,000 to $500,000 in $10,000 increments.

Special Monthly Compensation - S (SMC-S / Housebound)
$4,408.53/month total (2026 rate) — approximately $469.96/month more than standard 100%Additional tax-free monthly compensation for veterans who have a single service-connected disability rated 100% AND an additional service-connected disability independently rated at 60% or more. Also awarded to veterans who are permanently housebound due to service-connected disabilities. SMC-S provides a significant monthly increase over the standard 100% rate. This is commonly overlooked — many veterans with 100% schedular plus additional ratings qualify automatically.

Special Monthly Compensation - K (SMC-K)
$139.87/month per SMC-K award (2026 rate) — added on top of regular compensationAdditional tax-free monthly compensation paid on TOP of regular disability compensation for specific anatomical losses or loss of use. SMC-K is awarded per qualifying loss — a veteran can receive multiple SMC-K awards (up to 3). Common qualifying conditions include: loss of use of a creative organ (erectile dysfunction), loss of use of a hand or foot, deafness in both ears, blindness in one eye, loss of a breast, or loss of use of a buttock. SMC-K is the most widely awarded and most commonly overlooked SMC level. Must be service-connected or secondary to a service-connected condition.

VA Pension
Up to $1,453/month (single veteran, 2026)Needs-based financial assistance for wartime veterans with limited income and net worth who are 65 or older, or permanently and totally disabled from non-service-connected causes. The VA calculates eligibility based on annual income compared to Maximum Annual Pension Rate (MAPR).

Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC)
$1,699.36/month base rate for surviving spouse (2026)Monthly tax-free payments to surviving spouses, children, and parents of service members who died in the line of duty or veterans whose death resulted from a service-connected condition. DIC is not income-based and provides stable long-term support to military families.

Aid and Attendance (A&A)
Up to $2,874/month (veteran with spouse requiring A&A, 2026)An enhanced VA Pension benefit that provides additional monthly payments to veterans who require the regular aid of another person, are bedridden, are patients in a nursing home due to disability, or have a visual impairment. Also available as a Housebound benefit for those confined to the home.
