Skilled nursing care

Oregon operates two state veterans homes providing skilled nursing care for veterans and their spouses. Admission requires demonstrated need for skilled nursing care.

Education

Oregon Veterans Subsistence Allowance

Up to $150 per month subsistence

Provides a monthly subsistence allowance to eligible Oregon veterans attending college or vocational training programs.

Note: Monthly stipend up to 50 while attending college or vocational training. Must be enrolled at least half-time. Small additive cash benefit on top of GI Bill.

Oregon National Guard Tuition Assistance (ONGSTA)

Up to 180 quarter credits of tuition assistance

Provides tuition assistance for Oregon National Guard members at participating Oregon institutions — up to 90 credits at community colleges, up to 180 quarter credits at universities.

Below-market interest rate home loans

Oregon offers a low-interest home loan program exclusively for Oregon veterans purchasing a primary residence in the state.

Oregon Veterans Employment Preference

5-10 percentage points added to state employment test scores

Oregon veterans receive 5 percentage points added to state employment test scores; disabled veterans receive 10 points. Oregon National Guard members also qualify beginning January 1, 2026.

Oregon Military Retirement Pay Partial Income Tax Exemption

Exemption of pre-October 1991 military retirement pay from state income tax

Oregon allows retired service members to subtract military retirement pay earned for service prior to October 1, 1991 from state income taxes.

Oregon Disabled Veterans Property Tax Exemption

$26,303 (basic) or $31,565 (service-connected) reduction in assessed value (2025)

Veterans with a 40% or greater service-connected disability may qualify for a property tax exemption of up to $22,028 on their primary residence.

Oregon Disabled Veteran Free Hunting and Fishing License

Free combination hunting/fishing/shellfish license plus $25 elk tag

Service-connected disabled veterans with 25%+ rating who are OR residents for 6+ months receive a free combination license covering hunting, fishing, shellfish, and Columbia River Basin Endorsement, plus a $25 elk tag.

Oregon Disabled Veteran Free State Park Camping

Free camping and day-use at 26 Oregon State Parks year-round

Disabled veterans receive free year-round camping and day-use privileges at 26 Oregon State Parks, plus free day-use parking at all state parks.
