Model Context Protocol
The veterans benefits MCP server
VeteranHQ runs a free, public MCP (Model Context Protocol) server that gives Claude and other AI assistants 14 read-only tools for VA disability and veterans benefits, built on 38 CFR and VA’s own rate tables. No account is needed for any public tool.
AT A GLANCE
THE ENDPOINT
One address for every client
The address is public on purpose: it is not a password, and there is no key to hold.
Server URL
https://api.veteranhq.app/mcp- Transport
- Streamable HTTP
- Sign-in
- No sign-in for public tools; your own VA record only after you approve. How connecting your record works
INSTALL
Add it to your assistant
Claude has a verified setup. Any other client that adds a remote MCP server over Streamable HTTP takes the same address.
Claude
It reads your record. It cannot change anything at VA.
Step 1: Add VeteranHQ to Claude.
Add to Claude (opens Claude in a new tab)Form empty? Name it VeteranHQ and paste this address.
https://api.veteranhq.app/mcp Step 2: In Claude, press Add, then Connect.
Step 3: Sign in to VeteranHQ and press Allow.
Then ask Claude about your ratings, claims, or documents.
On a phone, do this once on claude.ai in your browser; the Claude app picks it up.
ChatGPT support is coming.
You sign in on veteranhq.app, in your own browser. Claude never sees your password. Access lasts 90 days, then Claude asks you to sign in again.
If it did not work
The sign-in tab showed your dashboard instead of the permission screen.
Press Connect in Claude again.
Claude says it has no VeteranHQ tools.
Turn VeteranHQ on in the chat's tools menu, then ask again.
Claude keeps asking permission.
Set the read-only tools to Always allow in Customize, then Connectors, then VeteranHQ, or pick Allow always on the prompt (that choice lasts only for that chat).
Claude Code
Run this in your terminal.
claude mcp add --transport http veteranhq https://api.veteranhq.app/mcpOther MCP clients
The common format, used by Cursor and similar clients:

"veteranhq": {
"url": "https://api.veteranhq.app/mcp"
}
}
}VS Code uses its own format:

}THE TOOLS
Every public tool

WHAT YOU CAN ASK
Ask in plain language
Once it is added, ask the way you would ask a person. Your assistant picks the tool.
- What is my combined rating with 50% and 30%?
- What VA benefits can I check with a 70% rating?
- What does SMC-K pay in 2026?
- Is my condition presumptive for Agent Orange?
BOUNDARIES
What it is, and what it is not
The same lines the server and the AI Connector page publish.
Educational, not legal advice
VeteranHQ provides educational information about VA disability benefits. It does not provide legal advice, it is not a law firm, and it is not an accredited claims agent.
We never file for you
VeteranHQ helps you gather evidence. We never prepare or file a claim for you, by deliberate product rule, and the MCP server is no exception.
Only VA decides
Only VA decides ratings, effective dates and payment amounts. A number from these tools is what the regulation or the rate table says, not a decision.
Public tools carry no personal data
The public tools take what you type and return what the regulation, the rate table or the published reference says. Not one of them can reach a veteran record, so there is nothing to sign in to and nothing to pay for.
QUESTIONS
Straight answers
MCP, the Model Context Protocol, is an open standard that lets an AI assistant call tools on another service. When you ask about a combined rating, your assistant runs the actual calculation on VeteranHQ’s servers and reports what came back, instead of reconstructing the answer from memory.
Claude has a verified setup, in Claude itself and in Claude Code, and the steps are on this page. Other clients that can add a remote MCP server over Streamable HTTP can add the same address. The tools that read your own record also need a client that can complete the sign-in on veteranhq.app.
Yes. Every public tool is free, with no account and no payment. The tools that read your own record are part of a VeteranHQ membership and work only after you approve them.
Not the public tools: not one of them can reach a veteran record. The tools that read your own ratings, claims and documents need a VeteranHQ account, a membership, and your explicit approval when you sign in, and you can turn them off any time in Settings. The AI Connector page lists exactly what they read.
No. VeteranHQ helps you gather evidence. We never prepare or file a claim for you, by deliberate product rule, and the MCP server is no exception. Filing stays yours, and only VA decides ratings, effective dates and payment amounts.
Answers from the regulation, not from memory.
Add the address once and every conversation can reach the rating math and the rate tables. Your own record stays out of it unless you decide otherwise.
