Ankylosis of the Ankle

VA disability rating criteria for Ankylosis of the Ankle under Diagnostic Code 5270. The VA assigns ratings of 20%, 30%, 40%, 50% based on the severity and functional impact of your condition.

Rating Criteria

20%Disability Rating

Favorable ankylosis of the ankle joint: In plantigrade position (the foot is flat on the ground, at right angle to the leg). This is the optimal functional position.

Note: Plantigrade = foot at 90 degrees to leg, which allows some functional ambulation.

30%Disability Rating

In plantar flexion, between 30° and 40°, or in dorsiflexion, between 0° and 10°

40%Disability Rating

Unfavorable ankylosis of the ankle joint: In dorsiflexion, in plantar flexion to 30 degrees, in inversion or eversion.

50%Disability Rating

Unfavorable ankylosis of the ankle joint: In plantar flexion, more than 30 degrees, or in combination with marked inversion or eversion deformity.
