Ohio GI Promise — Immediate In-State Tuition

Immediate in-state tuition rates (saves $5,000–$20,000/year)

Waives the standard 12-month residency requirement for veterans with at least one year of honorable military service, granting immediate in-state tuition at all Ohio public colleges and universities.

Ohio War Orphans Scholarship

Tuition and fee assistance

Provides tuition assistance to dependents of deceased or severely disabled Ohio veterans at Ohio colleges and universities.

Ohio National Guard Scholarship Program

100% tuition at Ohio public institutions

Pays 100% of tuition at Ohio public colleges and universities for eligible Ohio National Guard members. Renewable as long as the member remains in good standing with the Guard.

Ohio Veterans Civil Service Exam Credit

20% bonus on civil service exam scores

Veterans receive a 20% credit added to civil service examination scores for state and local government employment. Current Reserve and National Guard members who completed initial training receive 15% credit.

Every Ohio county operates a Veterans Service Office providing free claims assistance and emergency financial aid for rent, utilities, food, transportation, and medical expenses.

Ohio Disabled Veterans Property Tax Exemption

Full property tax exemption (no cap)

Honorably discharged veterans with a 100% permanent and total service-connected disability receive a complete exemption from all property taxes on their primary residence (Ohio SB 92, effective tax year 2025). Surviving spouses also qualify for the full exemption.

Ohio Military Retirement Income Tax Exemption

Full state income tax exemption on military retirement pay

Ohio fully exempts all military retirement pay from state income tax with no income limits, age restrictions, or caps. Includes SBP, RCSBP annuities, and retirement pay from all branches.
